Congratulations to our citywide Translational Cancer Researchers ~The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) recently announced the 2012 competition results for their Discovery Grants Program.
Dr. Joe Mymryk and Dr. Len Luyt (Oncology Scientists, Cancer Research Laboratory Program; and faculty members, Western University Department of Oncology) were awarded NSERC Discovery Grants:
Dr. Joe Mymryk, 1 year of funding at $36,000 per year for "Identification and analysis of non-conventional nuclear import signals".
Dr. Len Luyt, 5 years of funding at $34,000 per year for "Metal-organic compounds as scaffolds and libraries, for the exploration of biologically relevant chemical space".

Dr. David Litchfield, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Western University and a multi-disciplinary team of researchers led by scientists in London and Dr. Bernard Kraatz in Toronto as well as clinicians in the Division of Hematology at London Health Sciences Centre, is developing a simple tool that could one day make it easier to choose the best available cancer treatments for individual patients and improve their chances for survival. Dr. Eric Winquist contributes to a New England Journal of Medicine publication; Abiraterone in Metastatic Prostate Cancer without Previous Chemotherapy …..View Article….
Abiraterone improved radiographic progression-free survival, showed a trend toward improved overall survival, and significantly delayed clinical decline and initiation of chemotherapy in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. (Funded by Janssen Research and Development, formerly Cougar Biotechnology; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00887198.)

Congratulations to Dr. Eva Turley, scientist at the London Regional Cancer Program. Dr. Turley recently received a $100,000 grant from the Western Innovation Fund for a project entitled "Protecting against Radiation Dermatitis:  assessing the efficacy of a novel hyaluronan-phosphatidylethanolamine cream".  This translational cancer research program will include Dr. Turley, Dr. Francisco Perera and Dr. Arjang Yazdani.
